Lesson 42

How to Record Acoustic Guitar

Acoustic guitar is actually pretty easy to record. You can use almost any type of microphone, and a variety of positions.
My favourite method is to use a single microphone, placed about 1-2 feet in front of the guitar where the neck meets the body. This provides a nice blend of the picking sounds, and the tone from the body.
I also usually prefer to use a condenser with a cardioid pickup pattern.
You can use a large or small diaphragm capsule , it doesn’t make a huge difference.
While my preference is to use a condenser, a dynamic or a ribbon will work just fine as well.
Here’s some examples
